Part Two:

The Aftermath

Chapter Seven

Byron

“You have to be gentle, Jada. Remember when we practiced holding a baby with your dolls?” Byron stopped walking and crouched down in front of his daughter. They were only steps away from his brother’s front door, and he was just as eager as Jada to see his nephew, but he felt the need to reiterate the lesson he’d been driving home over the last two weeks. He looked her in the eye as she nodded vigorously.

“Yes, sir. I have to folded my arms in front of me to make a bed for the baby to lay on so I can sus-port his head.” Jada demonstrated the hold with her arms. Byron smiled at her and dropped a kiss on her forehead.

“Good job. Are you ready?”

“Yes sir! I’m so es-sited to hold the baby!” She was practically vibrating with excitement.

“Let’s go see baby Mali.” He stood, and they continued on to the door where he picked up Jada and allowed her to use the large, brass door knocker. Moments later, the door swung open and Nixon stood to the side to allow them entry.

“Nicky!” Jada wiggled in Byron’s arms until he put her down then she raced over to Nixon.

“Hey, Bug.” He held his hand out as if asking for a low five, and Byron watched as he and Jada began to perform an elaborate handshake. Byron grinned as Jada executed each step with a focused expression on her face. When they finished, they both looked up at him expectantly.

“Don’t mind me. I’m just waiting to see my nephew.”

“Oh yeah.” Nixon led them through the living room and down a hallway and into the room that had been set up as the nursery. The walls were painted a soothing, pale-lemon yellow and had images of baby animals in a parade around the length of the room. The letters M, A, L, and I spelled out the baby’s name in large wooden letters on the back wall of the room. There were yellow, green, and brown accents that decorated the room, which held a sparse amount of furniture. There was a changing table and a chest of drawers on one side of the room. The other held a gliding rocking chair and a full-length sofa, which was cater-cornered from the changing table with a floor lamp behind it.

Francesca sat in the rocking chair with what looked like a bundle of blankets in her arms, and Thomas sat on the couch. They both looked up when Byron and company entered the room. Thomas stood and met his brother halfway across the room. They slapped hands and hugged in greeting. Thomas looked down at Jada, who had stopped, frozen at the door. Her eyes were wide as she observed the room, and Byron realized that this was her first time seeing the fully decorated room.

“This is Mali’s room, Jada. Do you like it?”

Jada looked at her uncle and nodded. “Uh huh.”

Byron tsked. “Jada. That’s not how you respond.”

Jada immediately corrected herself.
